First of its kind? - Blue Prince Review

Updated: Sep 18

Introduction

While puzzle games have always had the potential to attract people’s attention, most of the recently released puzzle games have either failed to be a quality game or turned out to be quite dull. But "Blue Prince" ultimately overcame these problems and became a game we can call the first of its kind. Let me begin by telling the story of the game to explain my reasoning.

The Story

Our uncle Sinclair has left us the mansion he lived in until he died. But on one condition: There are 45 rooms in the mansion, and we need to find the 46th room to own this mansion. The main problem here is this: Every time we re-enter the mansion, the rooms seem to have moved. For this reason, we must try to solve this mystery by reaching the rooms in different ways every day. This is where the game mechanics come into play.

The Mechanics

Blue Prince is a game that combines roguelike and puzzle genres. This is the main reasons I think it is the first of its kind, as i said in the title. At the start of the game we find ourselves in the entrance of the mansion. We have the will of our uncle and 3 seperate doors in front of us. We try to solve the mystery by choosing the right doors and going in the right rooms.

But the catch is our player has a set number of steps they can take each day. We use steps to move around and enter other rooms. And if we run out of steps, we pass out and start the next day. We can increase our step count by finding food and some items found in a few of the rooms. This allows us to get further in the mansion.

Final Thoughts

When I started playing Blue Prince I realized I was approaching it completely wrong. At first, I thought of the game not as a puzzle game, but as a game with a dominant roguelike aspect. That’s why I felt like the roguelike elements were inadequate and prevented me from having fun in some sections.

But later I realized that the roguelike structure is not the main genre of the game; it is more of a side genre used to add originality to the game. When I began seeing the game as a puzzle game, I realized that each room actually has a specific purpose and that these rooms contribute to the progress in the game. This made the game more meaningful and fluid for me.

That is why I recommend going into Blue Prince knowing it is a puzzle game rather than a roguelike. I am sure you will have a much deeper experience this way. In conclusion Blue Prince managed to pull me into its universe and made me put a lot of thought into it. It is a special game that everyone who loves puzzles needs to try.

Pros

  • Every room has a unique puzzle that really makes you think about it

  • The game offers a fresh experience with its originality

  • Roguelike elements are blended well with the puzzle genre

Cons

  • Some players who like the puzzle genre may find it difficult at first, as it is not like other puzzle games.

  • It may not appeal to everyone because it has a more subjective and experiential structure.
